Staying inside the Ocotal Neighborhood
Ocotal is a small beach
within a gated community.
Although public access
is granted to the
beach, you primarily only
see residents and
guests of the hotel and
resort using the
beach.
Inside the community there
is a dynamite
sports bar and restaurant
right on the sand,
called Father Rooster.
It is a gathering
place for the residents
of the area, but
it's style and focus are
really geared toward
the American tourist.
If you continue over a
small mountain inside
the Ocotal community, you
will reach the
sub-community of Bahia
Pez Bela. These are
small condos, and a hotel,
which share a
tiny black sand beach and
fun little restaurant
called Picante.
Other than the resorts and restaurants mentioned
above, Ocotal beach is only made up of large
private homes. It is upscale and geared toward
preserving the natural surroundings. In the
mornings, many of the residents enjoy long
walks through the peaceful neighborhood with
its tremendous views of the ocean and lush
jungle.
If you prefer not to venture outside the
Ocotal neighborhood, that's just fine, as
you can find fishing, scuba diving, fine
dining, casual dining, and plenty of nature
RIGHT INSIDE the home's community.
Fishing Charters in Ocotal
The Ocotal Fishing Resort Says, "For
blue marlin, our waters are considered some
of the finest in the world. Seen year round,
most catches are made during December, January,
February, March and April. The rare striped
marlin is also occasionally caught in our
waters.
The fertile fishing grounds of the Gulf of
Papagayo provide year round action for approximately
25 varieties of sport fish. Although most
famous for its sail fishing from April through
September, these same waters produce great
marlin catches almost every month of the
year.
Sails are caught year round
averaging 1 to
2 sails raised per day
from October through
March. Boat crews are experienced
to assist
light tackle and fly fishermen
challenge
these 100 pound plus fish.
Apart from billfish, probably
the most sought
after prey for the sport
fishermen is the
roosterfish. More trophy-size
roosters are
taken from waters around
Ocotal than any
place in the world. Taken
on live bait, 40
to 60 pound roosters, taken
with certainty
all year round. "

Venturing outside the gate of Ocotal, the
town of Playas del Coco is 3km away. |

An overhead shot of Ocotal Beach - Cliffside
is marked with a red X |
3 KM away from the house is the fun tourist
town of Playas del
Coco. Here you'll find
a big grocery store,
plenty of restaurants,
a hotel, and even
a few casinos. There is
also some fun night
life at the bars and
clubs there.
During the day you'll
find local vendors
selling crafts and
clothing at street-side
stands, and lots
of tourists and locals
walking
and soaking up the
atmosphere.
The beach of Playas
del Coco is at the
end
of the main strip,
and is primarily
a fisherman's
area. There are many
fishing boats on
buoys
at this beach, and
if you're hanging
around
the beach at 4pm,
you can watch the
local
fisherman paddle
into shore with their
catch
of the day. Many
of those fish end
up on
the tables in the
area restaurants
that very
night.
Golf and other attractions
are slightly further
away, but still well
within reach.

An Ocean Hole at Hacienda Pinilla - (40 minute
drive from home). |
If Golf is your thing, you can get plenty
of it while
staying at Cliffside. The closest
course to the
house is a new one, called
the Papagayo
Country Club. It's brand new,
and public.
It is in the town of Sardinal,
which is about
15 minutes from Ocotal. You
can play 9
or 18, or even just visit the
covered driving
range for the chance to hit
a few balls
in the morning. Although not
a championship
course, its proximity to the
house makes
it an attractive option.
Another public
course within reach is Hacienda
Pinilla. It
takes about 40 minutes to get
there on a
newly paved road, which connects
the Papagayo
area over to the Tamarindo area,
which is where
Pinilla's course is. This
course is public,
and will satisfy any golfer
at any level.
It is manicured to perfection,
and the ever-present
breeze from the ocean
makes the course
challenging, as well as
visually breathtaking.
It's a long course,
so after your
round, you might enjoy a lunch
at the wonderful
19th hole at the clubhouse.
Liberia and
the International
airport
are only a
25 minute ride away. In Liberia
you'll find
a giant grocery store, a movie
theater, fast
food, etc. It's the biggest
town in the
area, and of course, is where
the international
airport is. Speaking of
that, if you
felt like checking out San Jose,
while staying
at Cliffside, you can book
daily flights
from Liberia to San Jose which
only last about
40 minutes. Nature Air and
Sansa are the
domestic airlines which provide
service from
Liberia to San Jose.
The area is
also full of
the normal
tourist
activities
of Costa Rica
which you can
go
and check out.
Here is a link
to another site which describes
them more in
detail.
